Routine Servicing of Manual Transmission

What is the suggested service interval to change the fluid in a 5-speed manual transmission (2001 TT) and what is the preferred lubricant ?

Answering my own question

I noticed lots of lookers at my thread question but no answers. :-/ Here is a video that may be helpful
I What remains unknown until I inspect the vehicle is whether I need any special tools to remove the drain or fill plugs on my 2001 model.

Another potentially good video.

Hi Pilot,

I purchased my 2001 Audi TT Quattro 225 in February this year. I'm slowly gathering information myself.

If you are doing your own maintenance you should invest in the Bentley Publishers "Service Manual".

Several available on eBay right now.

You don't say if your 5speed is front wheel drive or all wheel drive so I'll give you both from the Bentley manual:

Front Wheel Drive 5 speed:
2 liters (2.1 quart) Audi part number G 052 726 A2
"Special manual transmission oil G 052 726 A2 as supplied by Audi for use in front wheel drive transmissions. Viscosity and type are not specified in factory service information."

All Wheel Drive 5 and 6 speed manual transmissions:
2.6 liters (2.75 quart) Audi part number G 052 171 A2
"Special manual transmission oil G 052 171 A2 as supplied by Audi for use in all wheel drive transmissions. Viscosity and type are not specified in factory service information."

In an electronic version of the Audi workshop manual that I have lists the following for all the manual transmissions:
Gear oil SAE 75 W 90 (synthetic oil)

I was not able to find in any of my manuals a recommended interval to change transmission oil.

Hope this helps,
Russ

Russ, THANKS for the information. In the meantime, I took your suggestion and bought a Bentley manual on Ebay, pricey, but it will surely pay for itself soon enough.

You're very welcome!

I also found a guy in the UK selling electronic versions of the official Audi manual. I offered him 7.50 GBP (about $10.00) and he accepted and I was able to immediately download.

The downloaded zip file contained several directories, including a Haynes directory...

Well worth picking up for 10 bucks.

Search eBay for item number 132377645646

It was in this download where I found the SAE 74 W 90 spec for gear oil.

Best of luck with your TT!
Russ
