Stupid Intake Post
This is not a "what intake should I buy" post but more of a question/debate thread. Don't look at me I'm no expert, I'm just asking![&:]
I always read the "what intake" posts and I see the same thing said over and over again on this forum. Don't waste tons of money because there are no gains to be had beside better throttle response and it makes more sound. I always thought that this was kinda odd, because in a DSM a K&N FPIK could net you about 7-10hp. Why wouldn't it do the same on an Audi? What prompted me to ask this question is, I was reading an article in Barnes&Noble today about a stock Evo10. I don't recall the actual name of the mag, they test different aftermarket products. In the one I was reading they were testing several performance options by popular vendors such as Buschur Racing. They tested out different manifolds (Buschur's, to my suprise, was WORSE than the stock one)....and something else.... a simple aftermarket airfilter set up from K&N. They did a baseline dyno and found that Mitsu under rated the HP. For what they got at the wheels the car should be around 310bhp, not the 291 theyare claiming. After doing nothing more than changing out the intake the car netted over 14hp. This is not the first time I have heard of things like this. So why isn't it the same for an Audi? I could see a TIP and open element filter easily getting us 7-10hp but I have no proof or dyno's to back that claim up. What's your opinion? I would also like to use this test as an example of what I am saying. It is a intake upgrade on an Stage 2 STI using an open element filter and a silicon TIP. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1473991 |

RE: Stupid Intake Post
You are trying to compare a turbo capable of producing over 350awhp against a turbo making 200whp and 200awhp. The stock air boxes are able to flow more than what the cars are capable of making. If it wasnt, there would be a gain if we went to a more flowing intake.
Now the 2.0T's do see a gain from a intake, but thats because the stock box isnt enough flow for the added displacement |
RE: Stupid Intake Post
EDIT: posted at same time as cincy. his is more concise^ lol
Allow me. The TT has a SMALL TURBO. Hold a K03 in your hand sometime. It's tiny. Even the K04 is not much bigger. For a comparison, this is the Evo III 16G next to a T25 (which is roughly the same as/bigger than a K04) http://www.plymouthlaser.com/evo16g/.../e16gcomp2.jpg On a small turbo, it's hard to make things restrictive because it really doesn't flow that much air. On a bigger turbo...it's much easier. That STI pushes 300bhp stock and I've seen people tune them up to around 400bhp stock turbo. Most I've seen out of a K03 was mike savko running the living crap out of it and using nitro booster in his watermeth to get 250whp...which is still under 300hp. Audi's TIP flows fine for a stock turbo. The airbox flows fine too. Subaru's are perhaps restrictive for that big honkin' stock turbo. |
RE: Stupid Intake Post
Thanks! Excellent reasoning from you two and it makes perfect sense...I did not factor that in. This must be the case for the 2nd Gen Eclipse as well...too restrictive of an airbox..even for a T25. (it is nothing but a hairdryer in the higher RPMs, I pulled mine out and dropped in a Big T28 from Forced Performance). I have yet to hold the K04 in my hand but if you are saying that it might be a tad smaller than the 25.....that is tiny!

RE: Stupid Intake Post
here is my old gt28r next to my ko3. Even the 28r is pretty small

RE: Stupid Intake Post
Now that's a turbo!:) The T28 is the same size as a T25 but it flows alot more, it uses a modified housing and bigger wheels. Not a bad deal, I paid about $900 for it. Direct bolt ons make life so much easier. I ran it at 17PSI.Here is a poor pic of it after it arrived. You can use the Hallman' MBC as a size reference laying under it. By the way...5-6 years later I am running that MBCon my TT, LOL!
