Thermo / Radiator??? HELP!

Hi there All

I have an Audi TT 2001 model, 1,8 Quattro, 225 bbp.

Having had no real issues with it now for the past 2 years, today whilst driving home, I noticed that the temp drastically increased into the red and was boardering 130c!!

I stopped check coolant, put some fresh water in it. waited for 10 minutes restarted my journey. After 400 years this time, the same happened.

I decied to stop again , cool engine down and retry. Again this happened.

What is going on here? I think the fan is working, I left keys didnt turn car on put kinda half ignition, and had a peek and the fans went wild for a minute then stopped.

After carrying on and risking it, I found that everytime I was in traffic and therefore stationary the temp would go down slowly again, and then when driving even in fourth gear, it would increase and hover around 130c.

I have asked for my local recovery guys to come collect it tomorrow and take it to a garage in south london.

But does anyway have any idea what is going on with it?

I will admit I am not too clued up on the technical side of the car so please bear with me.

Thank you in advance!!

It could be a handful of things: Coolent temp sensor, broken water pump, or bad thermostat.

First i would change the sensor and if that doesnt fix it move on to a full timing belt job and replace the water pump with a metal one and the thermostat. If you are around 60k miles, it should be changed anyways.

I'll second that. First thing I thought after reading your post was that the impeller on the water pump is broken.

Hi there, so how easy is it to replace the temp sensor? Also the basics I understand of the system is that the sensor allows colder water to flow throught the system, with this not working the hot water stays in there and generally stays heated? Is this damaging? Or coudl the sensor issue bnot impeed this?

I am taking it to a garage tomorrow to see what they think, will let you know how it goes!
Thank you!

The CTS is a rather simple and strait forward install. Anyone should be able to do it in minutes.
