Default 01 1.8T Tune Up

This might sound foolish, but is there any particular way to do a tune up with an A4? Do the coil packs go in a certain order etc? Just a simple tune up regarding the plugs and coils. It seems pretty much plug and play and to me...with these cars, something doesn't seem right. Also, any pointers on the most efficient way of doing it?

Thanks in advance.

No order. Replace the coil packs, be careful with the connectors as they can break if forced. Use the cheapy NGK plugs (BKR6E or BKR7E if I recall correctly). Gap to .032 if using stock tune, .028 if chipped.

My car liked the NGK V-Power plugs. I noticed that the engine had a little quicker response and a slight increase in power when I put them on. They're about the same price too.

You could do a seafoam treatment as part of your tuneup. Links:

You know something. I was on my way to FL and my car broke down in ATL. Went to Pep Boys and they said my coils went bad (something new). I knew my cat was bad but they ignored me. replaced the plugs and coils, same problem. I gave the morons a bottle of seafoam to see if it would work and magically, it partially unclogged my cat and got me to FL and beyond. That stuff really works. Thanks for the suggestion.

Never heard of Seafoam before, but this looks like a nice thing to try sometime in the near future. Thanks for that link compmanben...

Also, not to thread jack, but what is the reasoning behind regapping to .028 with a chip? And, is that with every chip, or just certain set ups?

its cause the coil packs doesnt have enough spark with that stuff done to your car so u haft to gap them closer to get more spark

You also gap closer to avoid the high psi from "snuffing" the spark. This can cause misfires. Helps to run cooler and avoid pre-detonation causing misfires and stuttering. The BKR6Es are used because they are copper plugs. Less life but better heat dispersion which keeps them cooler as well. Stock plugs are undergapped for longevity, so gapping them to .32 on a stock engine can yeild some pretty surprising results. My exhaust tone was maybe slightly deeper, but definately more "beefy". it resonated. I also felt some better response and power. Car felt surefooted and strong! =D ahh, it felt good.

Seafoam will not un-clog a cat. If overused or used improperly, it will actually foul the O2 sensors and load up the cat!
