i just rebuilt the motor in my 2001 A4 Quattro 1.8T. Once it is starting it runs and idles perfectly. However, it will not always start right away. Often i have to turn the key, let it turn over several times, remove the key, then insert it again and usually it will start on the second or third time of this procedure.

Also, the check engine light is on. I am getting a code saying bad cam position sensor, however i just purchased and installed a new cam pos sensor after the rebuild.

any ideas as to what is going wrong?

 

What is the P0 code you are getting?

Your starting issue and code are likely related (obvious), but I just want to be sure you're not going to have a repat code if you replace the CPS again.

 

im not sure of the code just because i dont have my own computer and am not located near an audi dealer. local shop just told me cam position sensor is bad. because i just replaced it, and it doesnt just not start ever, he thought it could be a short in the wire

 

Could be, yes. But it's good to know the code. It's easy to confuse cam and crank position sensors. Whitout a scan tool, you're kinda stabbing in the dark. You'll need a wiring diagram and a DVOM to pin out sensors.
