18's would it work?

last summer i picked up some wheels and i just wanna put them on now.. the problem is that i am not sure if its going to work on my car. i have a 2000 a4 1.8t Quattro. i heard and read that i have to be really careful with these wheels( i can mess up my transmission and stuff). one reason is because the back ones are 18x9.5 and front are 18x8.5.. the guy i bought the tires from had these tires on them..
back 265/35/18-18x9.5
front 245/40/18-18x8.5

do you guys think it will work and i will not have problems with the transmission? i also wanna get coils
thanks

spacers, roll fenders you should be golden

thanks for the reply.. some ppl are saying that they would not fit the wheel well. so you think its ok with the 265/35/18 in the back?

with out spacers they will not work.

check these sites for spacers.

I think you'll rub in the back with 265's. I don't think you'll be able to fit them without spacers in the back. I have 18's RS6 reps which I test fit on my car about 2 weeks ago and with 225x40x18's I can barely fit my finger behind the tire in the back. This is with wheels spec 18x8.5ET35 and the wheels aligned perfectly with the fenders. My car is a 99.5 A4 2.8L Q. I guess it much depends on your offset, but regardless, at 9.5 I think the wheels will overlap the fenders unless you roll them as kduznetsov suggested and that will require repainting the rolled fenders. I would suggest stretching the tire a little bit and go with 245x35x18 with that 9.5 wheel. You can also play around with tire sizes here: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

I don't see any way 9.5" rears won't poke out of the wheelwells.

we can't really tell you if it'll work or rub or need spacers or poke or whatever without the offsets... I'd say they probably won't poke at all unless the offsets are somewhat low especially if the car's lowered. the diameters of the tires are really close (rears are actually barely smaller) so you could get them to work with quattro. it'll be hard to be lower with those widths and heights though, if you want low then you should get some 215/40 for at least the front. maybe 225/40 out back or you could even do 245/35

I said poke out because mine, at 8.5 with 35 offset align perfectly with my fenders without spacers. So I would imagine 9.5, at least on my setup with a 35 offset would poke out 1". Maybe his offset is different and can make it work.

thanks for all the replies.. i've read and heard that if you dont have right tires sizes and i dont know what on guattro you can mess up your tranny.. is that possible with the sizes of these tires? all 4 tires are garbage so i will replace them anyway.. i already bought 2 245/40/18.. do you guys recommend even putting those tires on at all? what would be the best match not to mess up my tranny. thanks

aledelic42 03-30-2011 02:36 PM

quattro can handle up to about 3% height difference in tires. I wouldn't use 245/40/18.. those are large. you should have gone with a 35 series tire if you want 245s which would have been really close to stock height
