1996 A4 B5 2.8L 12v to 2.8L 30v Swap
Does anyone knoe if putting in a 2.8L 30v motor and tranny from a 2001 A4 would be a direct fit into a 1996 A4 that originally had a 12v 2.8, do the bolts line up and other than changing the ECU is everything Else a direct drop in? as much feedback as possible cuz i've been givin a chipped 30v 2.8 out of a 01 A4 for free from a family member...i need to know if its a direct fit wen it comes to motor mounts and s*** like that

im pretty sure a 2001 will not fit in a 1996 very easily. anything 1999 and under will fit your car, 2001 will not. it may not be a big difference and you can work around the differences, but i would imagine its not going to be a strait bolt up. you could always buy a 2001 with a blown/no engine for cheap, sell yours and put the free engine in that car.

i get wat ur trying to say about it not fitting directly but i doubt that alterations to making it fit will be more of a hassle then buying a 1999 and up shell just to drop the engine in there wen i already have my 96 and if possible just making some alterations in the way the engine sits, thats why im lookin basically for someone who has done the swap already so i cud know what it consists of

I am new here but I am trying to learn as much about these cars as possible (probably why I change cars every year). Correct me if I am wrong but the 12v and 30v blocks are the same from what I have read. Possible additional needs to the swap I would think would be wire harness and possibly gauges (what does the 30v redline at)?

$125 for an engine swap seems cost effective to me

Don't forget that the radiators are likely to be different, the engine has to be replaced, the transmissions are different (which means the transmission controllers are different, as are the connections, which means a different body harness most likely - and THAT means tearing apart the majority of your car's interior to get the old harness out and the new one in), the exhaust routing may be somewhat different (not sure on that one), and who knows what else. There are a LOT of differences you're not taking into account.

Too many different things. You'd probably need a new cluster, immobilizer, and a huge pile of other stuff on top of what has already been mentioned to make it happen. If I were you I'd sell the 30v engine and pocket the cash. Way way way too much trouble for an extra 20ish hp.

He would not need to tear apart the interior to change out the trans controller, he could just use the trans he has anyway. The exhaust is probably different as far as the exhaust manifolds go, but the rest may be the same, either way its cheap and easy to fab something together. Jeez you guys dont really want him to do this swap but nobody has stepped up to the plate with any facts, just a bunch of "it will probably be hard don't do it." On other forums guys are discussing swapping 12v and 30v heads, 2.7t heads and KO4 turbos onto a 30v/12v block, etc. and you guys dont even think a simple swap is worth it.

if you have absoloutely nothing better to do for a few days strait and access to a full garage, and you replace everything just mentioned, go for it!! woooo 20 horsepower!!!!
oh wait- that 20HP cost you $800 in parts and 20-30 hours of labor... if its worth it to you then go do it. im just saying it wouldnt be worth it to me.
