1998 A4 Quattro Moonroof Issue
Hi, so I just bought a 98 A4 Quattro and have been unable to get the glass moonroof to slide open. It will tilt up and close no problem, so I don't think it's the motor. I tried opening the switch, cleaning and adjusting the metal contacts, and still no luck. When I turn the dial to "open" it lowers the back of the roof about 1" and acts like it is trying to slide back, but will go no further. I've heard that broken plastic guide clips could be the issue, where are these located and does anyone know of any easy fixes for this without having to replace the whole moonroof assembly? Thanks!

i also heard that this problem could be because of something in the way of the tracks and the car has a lil safety system where it'll stop trying to open or close or soemthing like that because it thinks something is in the way like for ex. a arm or someones hand or something...

There are little spring loaded plastic clips. These hold a rail that supports the back of the moonroof glass, effectively holding the glass up against wind pressure when you have it tilted up.
The plastic clips can get stuck on a metal piece that catches the moonroof shade so it doesn't retract all the way into the roof.
In my case little pieces of broken plastic were stuck in the track.
It is possible to take a look at the track without pulling the headliner and moonroof assembly, if I remember correctly (there's a detailed writeup somewhere):
1. Tilt up the moonroof.
2. Inside the car, carefully remove the the plastic beauty covers on the sides of the extended moonroof mechanism.
3. Somehow mark the position of the (6x) torx bolts holding the glass in place relative to the extended mechanism (dabs of yellow paint would work).
4. Remove the torx screws.
5. Remove the glass.
NOTE!!!! Do not change the position of the moonroof dial. Moving the mechanism without the glass in place can trash the moonroof mechanism.
At this point, you can see part of the track.
You may need to remove the moonroof shade to see more of the track. If that's the case, try to find the more extensive writeup.
