1998 Audi a4 1.8T quattro wont move but runs. I think its clutch or transmission?
HI,
I have a 1998 Audi a4 1.8 turbo Quattro and I don't know if my clutch or my transmission went out, I have a manual. Anyways, i was at a stop light and when it turned green i shifted into first gear as normal. I heard a weird snap/clank noise, and the car wouldn't move. So I turned the car off and than back on and still it would not move. i tried shifting without the clutch and the speedometer would jump to 30 if i put it in third. If anyone has the answer please help.
Thanks.

do any other gears work? try them all. You may have snapped only one shift fork inside the transmission, or you may have broke some linkage, or you may have clutch issues.
Press the clutch in and try 2-5 gears, and reverse. let the clutch out. if the car dies, you probably broke one shift fork. I'm a little rusty on my internal tranny knowledge, but I think if 1st and 2nd don't work, you broke that collar. 3-5 and reverse should work (meaning the car will die, except reverse it should move).

You may have broken a drive half shaft/CV/stripped a hub out. The Trans is spinning showing speed but the power goes to the spot of least resistance, the broken drive, so one of the drive half shafts could be spinning freely.

After a little thought, it might be your center diff. The speedo registering means the tranny and engine are linked. The next thing in succession is the diff. With that disabled, the car won't move.

You checked to see if what was spinning freely? With all wheel drive, if you break the CV joint/shaft to just one wheel, the car will not move as all of the power is sent to the free spinning axle. My bet would be on a CV joint. Get under the car and try to move each shaft (up/down, in/out, left/right).
