1999 A4 A/C Problem
I could use some help diagnosing my air conditioning issue in my 1999 A4. I live in Las Vegas and its pretty “toasty”. The problem is this: the AC will shut off intermittently when it’s very hot outside. When I say that the AC shuts off, there are various symptoms ranging from the compressor disengaging and the settings on the climate control changing to just the AC compressor disengaging for small amount of time (like 15 seconds or so). This only seems to happen when the outside temperature is over 100 degrees. One other interesting piece of information is that the ambient temperature always reads a lot higher than the actual outside temperature. For instance when its 105, the ambient temperature might read 140 degrees for a bit and will eventually lower while driving but there seems to be a delta from real temperature and what the ambient temperature sensor indicates. My gut feeling tells me that the car is in effect protecting itself from such (perceived) high outside temperature by cycling the AC compressor but I know enough about the safety system(s) of the cars electronic to justify this claim. Can someone out there provide me some assistance or direction to isolate my problem to a part or assembly?
