1999 Audi A4 1.8T Lost Keys got new Keys but Don't match Locks

Hi everyone.

So I just picked up this A4 for my dads retirement gift for winter that needs a few things, that turned out to be a headache.
I got the car with no keys cause last owner lost them. Last owner ordered new keys by using vin number. When the keys arrived they learned that that keys didn't match so they ordered another just in case bad cut.
Nope still no go, the Dealer thinks the previous owner before seller had locks changed.
My guess vandalism, attempted theft/theft because key from vin code only works on trunk.
I wanted to ask for your wisdom/knowledge what you think my options are.

1. Buy new ignition lock cylinder with keys(located for decent price) and install it myself, but I can't source door lock from anywhere besides dealer.

2. Purchase aftermarket Audi key from ebay with transponder, pull door lock cylinder off door, take it to a qualified Locksmith and then get keys made and programmed at dealer.

My question is the Locksmith way, will it be just as easy to program key as the keys that come with a new ignition lock cylinder?

What are are my options and what would you recommend from your experience?

BTW Dealer charging over 2.5K to have all locks changed and keys programmed.

Please help I am desperately in need of your guidance.

Thank you very much in advance :).

Just install new tumblers into the lock cylinders to match the keys you have. If you bring the cylinders to a lock smith he should be able to do it in about 15 mniutes. He can even use the trunk cylinder to tell him what tumblers he needs.

+1 to Mark. Should cost less than $20 per cylinder too.

Heres a page on how its done, all you need to figure out is where to get the correct tumblers to match your keys.

You can search it and find instructions on how to program the car yourself, as long as you still have 1 working key.
