Default 2.8 Quattro Exhaust

Hi, I searched and found a few results but i still have some questions.

I have a 99.5 a4 2.8 quattro and am looking to do an exhaust system.

I know a guy who does "custom" exhaust, I had him do my bmw 540i and my gmc yukon and hes really good.

I saw that most people use a Magnaflow 14815 muffler and get the rest custom.
I want a nice growling tone, but not too loud.

So my questions are...along with the magnaflow muffler, what size piping should i use? should i use a resonator? if so, what kind? will i see a performance increase?

Im not exactly exhaust-savvy, so dont criticize if i sound like i dont know what im talking about

thanks alot!

The stock 2.25" piping is good enough. If you can handle the drone then no resonator. If not then get a lightweight freeflowing res. I use Vibrant. You won't get any noticeable gains, just a less restrictive exhaust and better sound.

^ that pretty much covers it, but i've heard that the stock res, while heavy, produces a pretty good tone when used with the magnaflow.

seems to be a popular choice around here. There are many more options if you have a turbo but for the 2.8, thats gonna get you the most bang for your buck

With a 2.8 thats only going to make it louder as it doesn't really need any more flow. Here is a video of mine w/ the 14862. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzxJHoISGYw This video was the day after it was installed and is a somewhat poor example as its changed sound a bit after "breaking in" and the car was cold. It got deeper and more growly. I need to get a new video lol. I have stock exhaust and just had them install the muffler.

Sorry should have made my first sentence more clear. I meant that 2.5" is just going to make the car louder. You will not really feel any performance gains from an exhaust except possibly a little quicker free revving. I mean its a 2.8l w/ just barely over 2" piping at the back thats more then a lot of 2.8l out there. 2.5" may also make it sound a little echoy well at least that's how I would explain it lol. Although a good resonator would end that.

alright thanks. so im looking at getting a magnaflow 14815 muffler and 2.25" piping.

what brand and model resonator would be a good match? I want an aggresive growly type sound, not as quiet as stock, but not too loud. Id like to be able to have a conversation while driving lol. without yelling.
