Default 2.8l Mod questions (beleive it or not lol)

Okay hi guys,

I am in the process of buying a black 1996 audi a4 with 80k. It has the 2.8l engine in it, non quattro. First off, i would like to intake it.

1)Is there any CAI intake options for sale that arent going to cost under 200$
2)Are the 50 or so intakes for sale on ebay for the 2.8l worth it, or are they all crap?

After that, i am going to put an exhasut on it. I really dislike the way some people just throw an exhaust on it and have it sound ricerish. I would like to bring out the inner german v6 in my car. Borla looks like a good bet for that, deep tone, and not expensive, but not sure other than that.

3)You see countless Borla mufflers on 1.8t's, but would a generic Borla muffler work on a 2.8l? i havent found any 2.8's with Borla, if not Borla, what exhaust do you recommend for me that offers the tone i want?

How much are you paying for the 96? I would myself not buy anything less then a 98 just to get the 30v engine. The intake is not going to add any performance what so ever so the filter portion is all I would worry about as long as it connects to the MAF well. Get a cheap ebay one and put a K&N on it call it a day. I like my Magnaflow muffler on my 2.8 its a very deep tone and I left the resonator on to keep it from being too loud.

a 2 wheel drive 12v is the single worst A4 available. not saying its a terrible car, its an Audi so you are atleast driving in style, but on the list of A4's its definately at the bottom of the list.

an intake is basically a tube that air flows thru. as long as it has an air filter on it and it fits on the car, and you like the look of it, its hard to mess that up. even ebay intakes are fine to run.

if you are looking for intakes that "arent going to cost under 200$" (no idea why) there are a few brand names that look good but will cost you a pretty penny. not sure if Injen makes one for the A4, but along those lines.

I'm well aware of its base options. But, i am 16 years old, its my first car, and I work with what i have.

The reason for the 200$ cap is basically becuase i would like to get a filter for the sound. The intake hp gain is almost obselete. It may just be how i hear Magnaflow, but it sounds loud at times, but keeping the resonator could definetaly solve it.

And yes, I know there is some DIY intakes out there, but if possible, I'd like to not ruin my only way of transportation due to some noob mistake.

performance mods are utterly pointless for a 12v but if your jus going for sound, you can custom make an intake for cheaper than ebay. just get a non-oiled filter, an aluminum pipe, and a connector. the pipe only has 1 bend in it, most exhaust shops can do this for cheap.

I have to agree with the guy uptop a Magnaflow is a great muffler. I don't have one on my audi (mine is a 96 2.8 FWD aswell that I bought to not mod and daily drive only) but have one on my cougar that is a 2.5 v6 and love the sound.

When the cars warmed up at idle you can't even here the muffler. It sounds great when shifting hard into 2nd and 3rd though really deep growl! All of the performance mufflers are basically the same design not all but like a Borla and a Magnaflow w/ the same setup should sound basically the same I believe. I honestly am starting to think mines a little too muffled and want an aftermarket resonator to make it sound a bit better.

I don't know how much your paying for this 12v but I payed 4600 for my 99.5 and I think I payed too much. Mine is 2.8qm w/ winter package and sport package so its like fully loaded.

Hm, thanks for the input somebody.

I am buying it for 4000, its black, with 18" bbs rims i beleive. Kuhmo's, and HID's. Its 3500 without rims. but anyways, I think its a pretty good deal for the Great lakes region's prices. never had any mechanical problems and oiled every 4,000 miles, and serviced on time everytime.

A month back i came close to buying a 2000 Audi a4 2.8l Quattro with 20" rims on it. But it had 144k on it. Which isnt too, unless cared for. It didnt have its timing belt or anything vulnerable like that replaced on it yet, so i figured it might be a little too risky.

When i test drove it, smoke came from the front right Engine area, so i think it may have a bad cam tensioner seal, or a..hmm(i forget what its called now) thats a pretty easy fix for like 25$. I drive by it everyday, guy never drives it, its a shame. I just need a guy familiar to audis look over it andmake sure its not about to fall apart.

$4000 for a 96? Please go shoop around a little more. I paid $2500 for mine like two months ago and probably could have gone lower but I didn't feel like negotiating any lover that day.

$4000 should get you AWD and something newer than a 96. But that is just my mildly educated opinion.

wow you got a great deal. $2500 would get me like a door for a 1980 audi. I look on ebay, craiglist, and autotrader. There's just nothin. my limit is 6 grand. 4000 barely gets me a driveable audi. Im lookin for an a4, auto(new driver), and thats not about to cost me 1 grand within 300 miles of driving it.
