97 A4 2.8q EGR question.

I stop at a red light and all of a sudden my RPM starts to jump up and down. A few seconds later the check engine light comes on. I disregard this light because the car seems to be running good once it gets up to speed (still have the fluctuating RPM problem at idle). Today(about 2 weeks later) I was not too busy, so I decided to check it out. The OBDII reads EGR Flow Insufficient. After doing some research, as well as talking to some mechanics, I found out that it is possible to clean the EGR valve. This is where the problem comes in. I have no clue how I am going to unscrew the EGR from the pipe that connect to it on the bottom. there's like NO room at all. Has anyone done this before? Can I have some tips on how to get it off without damaging it?

Thanks

same thing happened to my car. I don't know how to remove the valve without buying a crow's foot wrench (22mm). 7/8" is easier to find and works ok too

i have the same problm... its annoying, sometime the idle drops so low all the lights on the dash come on and the car is happy again lol... u think seafoam could fix it? lol

The valve will pretty much have to come out. Soaking it in Sea Foam will probably cure it.

can u take a pic of it so i know what im taking out lol

I have the same problem lol.

I'm told the easiest way to get it off is to jack up the driver's side front, remove the wheel and inner fender liner, un-do the fitting at the bottom end of the metal line the valve is attached to, and take them both out the top as one piece. But I'll go to hell before i do that in a slushy parking lot in January lmao. It can wait.

im not allowed to... the rules of the apartments lol

yeah i'm not "allowed" either but its only illegal if you get caught ;)

paying $100 a pop for oil changes gets real old real fast

Hmmm, thanks a lot. The weather around here isn't too good either so I think I'll wait for the winter to pass or for a sunny day so I don't freeze my ass off laying under the car.

P.S. I think I'll turn this project into a DIY. I'll provide step by step instruction and add photos to each individual step.

Funny story, I've had that exact code for a while now, and just this morning it was acting up for the first time in a while. I'll get around to it.
