98 2.8QT multifunction switch what and where is it?

Hi, I am thinking about buying a 98 A4 2.8Q tip project car and the lady who owns it says that it isn't running right now and it needs a new multifunction switch or sensor i believe. Its currently at a repair shop and she said it was gonna cost about $500-1000 to get it fixed, I am just wondering if this seems like it would be why its not running and where the switch is located to see if i could replace it myself. The car is reasonably priced as far as i'm concerned, I know my way around BMWs and am fairly good with Audis too, I did the timing belt job on my 1.8t without a problem as well as several other things. But for some reason I cant think of where this multifunction sensor or switch is, so i really just want to know where it is and if its a DIY job. Thank you in advance for your replies, Nick

Okay so I figured out where the switch is, its in the top of the transmission. However I am trying to figure out how to go about accessing it, does anyone know if it can be changed from under the car or by taking the center console apart? and does this sound like it might be causing it not to start, by possibly causing the TCU to think that it isn't in park?
