Default 98 A4 1.8T roar sound - help!

I have a loud roar from the engine upon startup (1998 A4 1.8 T), which gradually dies down after about ten seconds after ignition. The rpms remain constant (normal) at idle upon ignition - i.e. the engine does not appear to be "racing". The sound only occurs about 50% percent of the time but its certainly noticeable when it does (the sound reminds me of the exhaust note from an old GM 2.8 v6). Otherwise the car drives fine - power good. Starts good.Quiet exhaust. Thanks for your help

the problem could just be that the engine hasn't got oil running around it during that period. it is quite normal for the engine to start slightly noisily and then quiet down after a few seconds.</P>

In the the 1.8t its usually the lifters/valves that make noise on startup for a little while (sometimes it never goes away - in which case you have dirty lifters).

Sometimes a premium synthetic oil will solve this, but most of us 1.8ers have the engine noise on startup no matter what we do.

Thanks for replies, i might add that i use 5w30 Castrol syntec so the oil flow should be good. Don't get me wrong here fellas, this is a loud roar sound that is not synonymous with the usual smooth start of the audi 1.8...its only been happening for the last month or so. Is there a chance it could be the turbo/oil flow?

roar as in a whistle? like a siren?
Other than that only thing I can think of is an exhaust leak that kinda closes as it gets hot.

lifters can make you sound sort of like a diesel. I agree change your oil. If that doesnt work use a cleaner like 'Justice Bros lifter cleaner'. I got mine from ECS Tuning and it brought down my noise.
