Default 98 b5 2.8 automatic

Ok guys I have an 98 b5 quattro 2.8 automatic that will only reverse. When put into drive or tip tronic it will only rev and thats all. Have anyone experience this or does anyone know what might cause this.

this started happening after a transmission fluid change and a tune up from a mom and pap shop. Had to drive 2 miles on back roads in reverse to get home.

First thing to check is the linkage. There is a bowden cable set up that links the shifter lever to the trans. There are two bolts that hold a bracket to the trans...any chance those are gone and the cable just isn't pulling very much?

2 miles in reverse to get home? Lol. Did you record it? This sounded epic.

It also sounds like your transmission is giving out.

problem fix after checking the connection on the transmission which was loose car finally got into PRND432 but one big problem when I put gear into drive I felt big jerk car began smoking like crazy and then shut off. Now I know for sure I need a transmission. What transmissions are compatible with the DRN transmission.

Just curious, are you saying the car was cold, you put it into gear, it jerked then started smoking? I could understand the smoke if the car was hot or moving. You burn up a bearing or trans fluid squirts onto something hot. But if it was cold you might have just burnt up something electrical.

Did you lose your fluid? Where was the smoke coming from?

Car was hot had it on for awhile before I got it to go into Drive and have the cluster recognize that its in drive. It sounded like it was slipping and couldn't catch before it shut off and now it no longer reverses. Cant even get it to go into neutral.

OK, I give in. It's done alococo. Sorry.

I wonder if your mom and pop shop put enough fluid in it....or what kind of fluid they used....
