Default A4 B5 hobby/fun car

Hi all,

I have always liked the way the B5's looked 1998-2001 and am thinking about picking up one to play around with and tune a bit as a hobby car.
I have checked out several types but am not sure which engines would be best (I currently live in Germany, so it is German spec's) If anyone can give me some pointers on pro's and con's to these engines it would help a lot!

1.8i-20v 125hp non turbo, but maybe not tore up!
1.8t-20v 150-180hp (my favorite, but problems?)
2.4i-30v 165hp Good performance, but lacks fun of turbo.
2.8i-30v 193hp Very good performance, but getting hard to find here.

I also like the S4 but the price for those here is still way too high!

Any advice/information is much appreciated!

if you are looking to mod for some more power the 1.8 turbo is hands down the best. we dont even have the 1.8 non turbo or 2.4 available here, but the 2.8 is a nice engine but not many power mods available.

yeah what he ^^ said. but you will definately be needing alot of money on top of the car to add mods. what knida of things you wanna do? you want a lot of extra power? being from germany that is kinda interesting as far as availability of parts goes.

Thanks all for the information. I have looked at the Tdi's they have here
(1.9tdi 90/110hp & 115hp, 2.5tdi 150hp) but so far they are all pretty well used up. Germans usually buy TDI's because diesel is sooo much cheaper than gas. Also the TDI's are usually used for long distance driving, so you can imagine the type of miles those cars have. 300+ tkm is not uncommon.

I test drove a 2000 2.4 (165hp) sport model and it was nice (nothing like my 2.0t ) but I was not that impressed with the stick shift in it. Are the 1.8t sticks different? Or would tiptronic be the way to go?

If I pick up a 1.8t I would want to do just some moderate tuning. Lower it of course, different exhaust, wheels and maybe a chip depending on the mileage the model has. I would want to keep it looking original, but classy/sporty.

Own the 99 2.5TDI, had to go to Mannheim to get it, but well worth it to drive back to Baumholder.

Only 246 tkm, and the mileage i got was roughly 40+mpg @ 130km cruising. diesel, is like 1.49EUR, with an esso card its like 1EUR/Liter. its in great shape too. ready to beast the winter.

First of all, I'm jealous of you for being in Germany. Let's swap parts.

I'd go with the manual 1.8T if you're planning to mod the car. Or a TDI if you wanna save gas and still mod the car.

Haha, well i'll think about it. I like the Euro look. For the 99 B5 it doesn't have the headlight washers.. but then again its not the b5.5 like my 2.8 was.

The TDI is awesome on gas. even better in the snow. Not very many modifications readily available, you sort of have to improvise, or know what parts from other cars will fit. I've posted elsewhere, but the AKN engine i know nothing about. /bang head here kinda deal. as soon as i can get a lift, i'll know more about what i'm looking at. kinda hard to do maintenance outside in the barracks parking lot.
