Default A4 Reliability Questions

Hello Audi owners, I'm the newest of noobs.

Alright, I currently own a 2005 Mazda 3 Sport GT, and long story short I am considering selling it for a German of some sort (I miss my old Jetta too much). The owner of a 2001 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro willing, its my hope to look at one example this week, but I have questions about reliability.

He says that oil has been changed like clockwork every 5,000 kms (this is Canada), and the tierod ends have just been replaced, along with alternator, battery and a few other bits.

The vehicle has about 160,000 kms on it, and I want to know what costs I would be walking into with it.

Engine: I have heard PLENTY of bad things about the 1.8t engines if they aren't looked after properly (and even if they are), but there doesn't seem to be much on the 2.8. He mentioned that the timing belt will need replacement soon, so will this be an outragously expensive proposition? How does the engine's reliability fair overall?

Transmission: The car is (unfortunately), an automatic. Are these transmissions reliable? What should I be looking for in terms of problems or warnings signs?

Quattro: One of the main reasons I'm looking at this car is for the quattro, we get lots of snow. But once again, what should I be looking for? Is this system going to present problems or costs?

I would just appreciate any experience anyone has with a car of that age in mileage, and what I should be looking for (or a mechanic) when/if I can make it for a test.

Much appreciated, I hope I can join the Audi world.
