A4 vs S4
Ok, so I am in the process of buying an Audi. I am in love with the b5 s4. But, I have heard more than once that the s4 can be a little less reliable than the a4 (say... b5 1.8t). One of my goals with buying this car (either a4 or s4) is that i want to be able to keep up, if not beat an '06 mustang gt. Is the 1.8t capable? or another a4 perhaps? or would i be best off with the s4? Are the negatives that come with the s4 worth it? Any inquiries please. thanks
It's not less reliable, it's just more difficult/labor intensive to work on due to there being less space/bigger engine and there being 2 of some things, such as turbos, exhaust mani, diverter valves, etc makes it more expensive.. You can mod a 1.8T into an S4 eater easy. Insurance is a bitch on the S4 compared to the A4. The 2.7T is a great engine though.

2.7 is awesome and torquey. I miss mine for sure. But if you get an MT A4 you can be putting out 300awhp no problem spanking Stangs but it won't be cheap. Any BAT project from scratch can cost around 6-8k on a budget.
I think that's a wise choice. The money you would dump into the S4 in normal up-keep alone could be better diverted towards upgrades for your 1.8. As mentioned, you could go S/C on a 2.8, but they would only be as fast as a stock S4
