No way. Most people love the awd. They'd sell some, but when word gets out about how terribly the car handles as a DD, sales would be limited to those who are only interested in straight line drags at the track.

A couple local guys I know did it. The center diff is very easy to take out. They got a used one from a wrecking yard, welded the hell out of it and covered the original in oil and stored it for winter.

I think they just need to bring back the locking rear diff the Coupe quattro had.

Your right that they probably wouldn't sell terribly well but as a DD the handling shouldn't be effected at all as you would not be changing how the quattro system works but just locking it and releasing it from the front when you only wanted rwd.

If you're so serious about squeezing every ounce of power from your 2.8, why did you get a 2.8 besides it being cheap? Cuz there are plenty of dirt cheap 1.8t's that are lighter and better for track. Stasis makes a center diff that can help you with your idea of fwd-awd-rwd. There are plenty of rwd's but that sounds like the most unpractical idea unless the car is track only and stripped bare. But to each his own I suppose

^ F**k the ECU. This is gonna be my first mod on the MT.

i love the awd too, there would really have to be a change in my style of driving after going to rwd.

baconbait, so this is a pretty easy process hua? the thread that i read on audizine diddent really get into the process too much, no step by step, it only said that it took about 5 hours. a second opinion that this mod doesnt take much effort is giving me the urge to follow up with it.

Does anyone know the added weight that quattro puts on the B5? And if i am correct, the trannys would be entirely different models too. One being fatter than the other?

since audi doesnt make a rwd tranny for the b5, or any audi for that matter with the exception of some maybe really old ones, i dont know what you would have to do about the transmission. you may just have to use the quattro tranny and somehow stop the front diff and center torsen from moving as said before.

i was refering to the FWD tranny being mounted sideways and the AWD tranny being mounted longways. considering they are in the same designated space that is provided given the dementions of the B5...i was wondering what the difference in weight would be between the two trannys. i would think that the AWD tranny would be larger/heavier....i was just wondering by how much. Also, the difference in weight between an AWD car and its FWD counter-part.

What? Have you even looked at the FWD tranny on the A4? The A4 fwd tranny is basically the same tranny as the quattro, it just doesn't have a rear output shaft or a torsen.

MrFlippant that would be great, it feels good to think that the conversion can possibly easily be switched back and fourth. i am basicly looking for the ability to spend less engine power turning awd when in a straight line, i am planning on supercharging soon.

Reasons for intrest in RWD or FWD Converstion:

1. "Free hp" from less awd drag
2. RWD power is always fun when in control, burn outs, wip'in the tail out, ect.
3. I will only take intrest if the project is not an arm and a leg.
4. Having something that is different that makes people say "really?"

and for those who are interested in putting up a response.....i am not able to sell my awd A4 for a front wheel drive because it is not worth selling because of the dirt cheap price i bought the car for, and the condition that it is in.

Sorry to tell you this but if you weld the torsen to make the car RWD your not going to free up hp since you are still turning the same driveline and power is still being set to the front diff even if your not running front shafts to turn the front wheels. Yes you will only be putting power to the rear tires but how long are those tooth pick size shafts going to last while trying to push that 3500+ lbs car all the time.

You will not be able to convert a FWD car to rwd or even to AWD since the rear sub frame of the car is completely different, even the rear suspension is completely different.

BTW the stasis torsen mod only changes the power bias while coming out of a corner very hard on the throttle, the rest of the time it will act just like the stock torsen which splits the power 50/50 and the other things it does.

Exactly, its only effective during the apex and when you exit the turn. Great for track or aggressive twisty highway driving and I'm sure its a deal for $500. Plus its a lot smarter than a permanent 2wd mod
