B5 rns-e
Anyone else know about this or have done a recent RNS-E install?
I've already done the double DIN swap, but I've seen installs where they integerate the NAV into the DIS display shown below.

Ok so I looked into this a bit more. I believe to get Nav and some other functions to work on your DIS instrument cluster you need a cangate from Bjarne. Others manage to get the rocker switch on their stalk to work as a PTT and control everything by voice. This is freaking a crazy feature for a 10+ year old car. The cangate was around $160.
I just don't know what a Can-bus is... I don't think I have that on my 99.5 but I did my double din swap pretty easy.

I've been wanting to do this. ill post the link of the all inclusive diy how to. shows you how to code the car for every feature and everything. Only thing is can't buy the can emulator anymore. You don't have a can-bus which is a bad start. You can make the emulator, granted your gonna have to figure out how, my solution for my 99.5 is a full s4 interior harness swap. Im about to start on it in a week or two.
Cn-bus is a data line that uses two wires instead of however many is needed. much simpler system than having to run a wire set for every thing you want to control.

thanks! I remember running into that PDF file a long time ago and had saved it somewhere until my comp crapped out.
There's also this video install. I've always wanted to do this too, but I didnt know you could put NAV directions on your DIS.
Audi Navigation RNS-E Installation - Video
Here's another video of a guy driving with that function on.
Its cool how the music lowers the volume down when the NAV girl talks. This is so pure class.
After a few readings, I believe most RNS-E are the same but a slight different fitting on the face plate. They say the closest one is the A6 model where its just slightly larger and can be trimmed by a tiny bit to do a good fit.

getting the faceplate to fit is probably the easiest part haha. ill be doing this soon tho after a few other things happen. I've been craving it for years, the info in the DIS is just crazy for 12 year old car. go buy a general non luxury car these days and you don't see half the things that this car has.
I freaking LOVE this car! All the things that are available now have been secretly hidden inside a 10-12yr old car!
So I've found out more info. Neljoe from Youtube replied back:
"You donīt need the cangate to get all the rns-e info on the DIS. You must have a cluster with a digital clock, an after that all you need is the correct wiring (4 wire swap) and vag-com alteration. You can google "nsxjr + rns-e" and once you are on his download page, take a look at the "RNS.pdf" document... that will help you out.
"
Freak I have the *edit*Analog*edit* clock! >:/
I know I've read others doing this swap. Bones I believe upgrading to the S4 wiring harness will allow you to easily swap out to the digital clock cluster.

the only reason you need the cluster with the digital clock is because thats when audi went to can lines. basically with the s4 harness it will be mostly plug and play minus the additional accessories you'll need to wire. I'm pretty sure its the only way for a legit install.
lol do you have digital or not? u say you have digital but have angry face after.

I just found this from another forum B5 RNS-E Retrofit Parts List Needed.
Bolded text are my input and outsource to where it can be bought from
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I've done this conversion in a B6 and a B5.
In a 1999.5 you'll need the following double-din items:
- Front portion of the console ******DONE
- Double din cage (for the rns-e & hvac) *******DONE
- Shifter plate (auto or manual, whichever applies in your case) ***DONE
- Ashtray *****DONE
The RNS-E you want is one from an A6/S6/RS6/Allroad C5.
You'll also need:
- Quadlock to ISO wiring adapter (Bose or non-Bose) depedning on your car
Buy here
- GPS Antenna & Fakra Connector
Buy here
- Am/FM antenna converter
Buy here
- Radio removal keys (I broke off the tabs from my symphony because its a pain sometimes when using this too)
- RNS-E Australian map DVD ***** I'll source it out one for Canada
- VCDS cable to recode the RNS-E (I'll buy the vag cable from ebay to use on a laptop)
- Cangate module for DIS integration if you have a digital clock in your dash cluster or a Can emulator if you have an analog clock.
Find him here
- RNS-E adaptor harness with built in can bus simulator
Buy here
Then use this tutorial to help with the install
http://www.f1computers.force9.co.uk/...s_Audi/RNS.pdf (thanks bones for directing this to me)

Just making some documents for myself sometime down the road. Maybe this will help someone too. It took me like 2yrs to jump onto doing the double DIN swap and it was not very hard at all. Hopefully this is the same
