Best Gas Mileage (Quattro) – Which Engine?

Looking at used A4’s and I’m curious as to which engine gets better gas mileage when you’re talking Quattro’s.

I would think the 1.8 turbo simply due to displacement, but I have no idea how each engine is set up to run.

I’m looking for a commuter car and the A4 just seems right for me.

Also, it would be nice to get some average gas mileage numbers. I once got 19 mpg in my jeep wrangler only because I had a huge tail wind. In the 109,000 miles that I’ve driven the vehicle, I’ve never saw over 18 mpg again.

I’m hoping that most of your numbers are calculated by hand. I’m not sure if the year A4’s that I’m looking at (or that we’re talking about) have the onboard computers that calculate gas mileage, but I never trust them.

Thanks for any information,
-matt

Ok , I've got a 2000 A4 with 200K miles on it.

Before I chipped it, I was averaging 27.5 mpg highway cruising at 70 mph.

After chipping I was averaging 28.5 to 29.5

After new cat and Borla exhaust, I average 31 -31.5 mpg all highway.

I'm not sure what I average but I can tell you that I spent 67 dollars on gas last weekened driving from Columbus Ohio to Holliday valley new York and back, that I have 200K on my engine and that I think the 12v would be a pretty fuel efficient engine. I've heard of people getting well into the 30's.

that was a very worthless post above me. Unfortunately, I don't drive my audi unless I don't have access to another car so I couldn't tell you what kind of mileage I'm getting. This is a good question which engine gets better mileage, because the 1.8 would strain hard to keep up with what the 2.8 does.

My 99 30v 2.8 manual quattro gets consistent 31ish mpg in highway driving, with 167k miles on the clock, at a speed between 70-75mph. Around town, the 1.8T will likely do better than the (estimated) 17-20ish that I get. On the highway, you may find that overall the V6 auto does better than the manual - my manual tachs 3000RPM at a bit over 70mph, where my buddy's 12v V6 auto is only around 22-2300RPM.

Your post is rather worthless in this case... There is SO much info on this its not funny. This post comes up once a week and hands down the 1.8 gets better mileage. My 2.8 maxes out at 29mpg w/ a big tail wind and averages like 27 highway for me. You can go to www.fueleconomy.gov which shows user posted averages against the factory estimated mpg.

i have a boost leak so i get horrible gas mileage... but usually i get pretty decent mileage about 200+ miles out of a full tank of gas.
