yeah man - this is pretty crazy. I am adding a computer to the car. That screen is a 7" vga touch screen. The computer is a 1Ghz and will be used for mp3 playback, navigation/gps, and anything else I feel like. Will run WinXP as the O/S. I am not the only person to ever do it - but I have planned it for a while.
I have stripped out all the premium Bose system and am replacing it with new stuff also. Right now my car has no interior side panels, no trunk interior, and no dash trim. She looks pretty bad - but it will all be worth it... Check out this thread to see what I did... mp3car.com<edited><editID>brrman</editID><editDate>37944.4051736111</editDate></edited> |

I have the computer system built, but I am not installing it until my new stereo system is fully installed - I am in that process right now. Replacing the premium bose system with all new components - and junking the Concert headunit.
This computer is a small form factor mini-itx motherboard by Via (www.mini-itx.com). Has an integrated 1Ghz processor, onboard 5:1 audio, onboard video, with USB and firewire. And its only 7" x 7" in size. The computer will go in the trunk and have a special power supply to boot it when the car is started and auto shutdown/hibernate when the car is turned off. Also will have wireless Wi-Fi for up/down loading info to and from my home computer, as well as a wireless keyboard and mouse for doing things awkward on a touchscreen... I'm buying a good quality audio card to replace the onboard sound though. It's taken months of planning to get this far, but I am so close to having it all done I can taste it! BTW - that screen you see shown on the GNET website is my exact screen - a Xenarc touchscreen... |

Using FM frequency to play anything on will sound like crap. My soundcard feeds into a LineDriver/EQ unit that serves as a headunit. That feeds the signal to the amps. I use all 192kbps MP3's and it sounds great.
Unless you friend has an Audi the headunit will be no good to him. They have all propriatary connections and push out 3 ohms. Not to mention my headunit is not in the best shape because I had to wrench it out with a screwdriver. The keys did not work and the radio was stuck so I had to use any means necessary to get it out - and in the process I managed to loosen some of the connections on the faceplate. So now it sometimes stops working until you press the faceplate secure. It's not like hanging off or anything though. But if he really wanted it I would let it go for absolutley dirt cheap once I get my stereo installed (by December) <edited><editID>brrman</editID><editDate>37950.4066782407</editDate></edited> |

cool - I am getting ready to do the stereo install within the next week or two. My interior is currently half taken apart and I am sick of looking at it like that so I guess I will have to get on the ball...
Mounted my front speakers and crossovers today. Tomorrow I am going to try and make an amp rack and lay some wiring, as well as mount the line driver that replaces the head unit. a lot of freakin work... |
