Default Cam adjuster

The mechanic told my friend he needs the 'cam adjuster' replaced on his 2000 A4 1.8T.

Do they mean what I call the timing belt tensioner?

They quoted $850. I assume they basically say he needs a timing belt job?

I replaced mine about a year ago, I even started a thread on the topic: https://www.audiforums.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=151338

Overall, it cost me about $250 and maybe part of an afternoon to get everything in properly. Two people are really necessary to make the job less of a headache, since getting that cam back on the chain can be kind of a pain in the ***.

Default Cam Tensioner suspect - keep driving?

I found a complete kit for the ATW at Blaupart for under $200 (incl. gaskets, etc.).

Your thread ended with 'parts ordered'. Do you have a suggested write up with pics?

The reason for suggested change is a broken piece of plastic that looks like it comes from the tensioner (as per mechanic). No other symptoms.

Should I keep driving the car until symptoms occur?
What are early symptoms of a failing tensioner?
What is worst case (chain tensioner fails)? I assume loose chain, could jump teeth and bring intake/exhaust valves out of sync; or fall off; possible bent valves...)

Sounds like he's talking about a timing CHAIN and not a timing BELT. The chain runs from one cam sprocket to the other in the back of the head under the valve cover. The tensioners are readily available on ECS, and the DIY ain't bad. Definitely not worth paying 850 bucks.
