Clunking Sounds...
Hello... I have a B5 A4 w/ Quattro (85k). I have a little bit of a clunk when stopping and when I take away from a stop light. I don't hear the clunk when turning to the extreme left or right nor when I hit bumps. I have jacked up the car and tried to see if the baring/ ball joint is bad but I'm not able to replicate the sound. Also, the outside of my tires on the passenger side have been worn down hinting at a bad alignment. Could a tie rod end cause these issues? Any suggestions?? Thx!

Tighten yer nuts!?
I had a similar problem after new tyres were fitted cluncking under braking, a couple of the bolts had worked loose? Long shot but you never no?

Is it one solid clunk after you accelarate followed by another clunk? Mine does this and I was told its the snub mount (front engine mount)? Just a suggestion. It could also be your control arm I had a nissan altima and every time I braked it would give a nice clunk

mine also has a clunk, sounds like its coming from the drivers side front axel. ive been trying to replicate the sound but i cant really figure out where it comes from. heres what ive found:
it seems to be like theres slop somewhere in the axel, when i accelerate decently hard in reverse, then stop, put it in drive, the second i start to go forward it happens. also sometimes does it in the reverse of that, for instance if i accelerate hard, throw it in neutral, it will clunk the second i hit the brakes like the axel has a few MM of rotational travel between one direction and the other. thats the best way i can describe it, ive done everything short of taking the whole driveline apart. there isnt really any play in that axel and the sound isnt getting any worse. il have the engine out of the car next spring and will look at it more then. if anyone has an answer to this i would be happy to know what it is. |
