Default Clutch/Gears Problem

Okay, I'll start off with what I know about the car, which hopefully will be of some use to solve my little dilemma. It is a 1999 A4 2.8 Quattro. It has 106,000 miles. It has never, truly, been ran hard except for a few highway races. The only problems I have had with it is that the power steering went out and I took it to a mechanic who specialized in Audi/BMWs and took care of her very nicely.

Now, for my dilemma. I was taking her for a small cruise outside on a sunny day when I started hearing a clicking noise and then a scraping noise, as if something was hanging and scraping along the concrete. I pulled her over to the side and checked the underside; nothing was hanging loose. I got back in and went to start her back up; I went from neutral (no noises) to first gear, which is when I heard the clicking and scraping again. I decided to not press any further into the situation and had AAA come and used a free tow back to my house.

This was two days ago. I have been talking to a couple of my other fellow Audi owners, but they drive automatics and said they don't know what the problem could be, so now I come to you guys with my hopes up and that we can find out the problem, which hopefully won't be something extremely serious.

Thank you all kindly for taking the time to help me.

Does anything make the noise go away? Is it constant or intermittent? (I understand it comes back when you put it into gear)

The only thing that makes the sound go away is putting it back into neutral. I haven't tried using reverse yet, if that makes a difference. The sound is constant.
