Default Clutch replacement OUCH!

So, last night was leaving the gas station and the clutch got really soft. Made it to the light and boom the clutch was toast. Had it towed to a shop this morning. He said the throw-back bearing was toast. So, they said that I should replace the clutch in the process.

$1200 later!

I couldn't believe the price. They said it was mainly labor since it is a 8 hour job.

I hope I am not getting hosed!

1200 is a pretty standard price if you dont do the work yourself. if you had then you could have saved $800.

Ok. I appreciate that. I don't have the knowledge to do it myself, so I guess I pay the price for being mechanically retarded. The thing that kills me, is the person I bought the car from had a Stage 2 put in at 80k. So, this clutch only lasted 14k miles. The people at the shop said it could have been caused by a mis-adjustment by the person who installed the Stage 2. I just couldn't believe the clutch went that fast.

if it was a "stage 2" no-name brand clutch that most idiot 16 year olds buy off of ebay for $50, im surprised it lasted that long. if it was installed improperly that could also have caused the failure.

If the throw out bearing broke why would you need to replace the clutch that is only 14k old?

If you did put in a new clutch did the shop give you the old one? Because they could have just been looking to sell a clutch since they were pulling the trans out.

Well, I decided to replace the clutch as well. They have to take out the transmission to get to the throw out bearing, so it is a ton of labor, so I figured while they have it out they mine as well replace the clutch. They said they could not warranty the work if the clutch was not replaced. When the bearing went out you could smell the clutch burning, so I was sure if it was damaged. I decided to be better safe than sorry.

You did better than me! my clutch went out on New years and I got it replaced and it was 1,750! (Not even dual-mass flywheel!) but clutches are awful annoying to have to get replaced and way to expensive!

I just got a call from the shop. He said the clutch was toast. They pulled out a LUK clutch. This isn't a Stage 2 correct?

Also, can anyone tell me what the normal RPM is for the manual tranny in 5th gear at about 70 - 75mph?
