driver front axle locked up
Im replacing the outer cv boot on the driver side. When hammering the joint back together after swaping the boot I noticed the axle does not want to spin properly now. The axle normally is able to spin freely but now when it spins it wabbles as it spins (in order for the axle to spin the whole shaft actually needs to move around slightly) and since I have not put the axle back into the spindle assembly it has the room to do that. But as soon as i put everything back together there is going to be a major issue. Im guessing somthin locked up on the inner axle joint when i was hammering the outer joint back on. Now im lost, and dont know what to do.
Well i decided to take the axle off completely and when I pulled it away from the transmission and a couple of the ball bearings fell out of the end that connects to the tranny. Any one know what the trick to getting those back in?
Well it turns out if the ***** fall out the inner cv joint you need to remove the innver cv joint from the axle and then put them back in, it is nearly impossible to put them back in while the joint is still attached to the axle. I decided to regrease everything and reinstall since the ***** and cage looked to be in good shape. Hopefully I dont notice any issues once the car is back on the road. Ive had the damn thing on jack stands the past 3 weeks now lol due to various repairs.
Well the only reason the bearings fell out in the first place was because i was hammering on the outer joint (while the axle was not perfectly straight) and it caused the inner joint to lock up. So when i took the axle off to fix the issue a couple of the ***** fell out because i really had to yank on the axle to get it off. If the axle had locked up on me while i was driving that would be a much bigger concern and I would definitely replace the inner joint. Plus from everying i have read about aftermarket axles on these cars is that they can cause issues becasue they are either cheap or they dont fit exactly. Im going to keep an eye on it once i get the car back on the road and if anything ill just replace the inner joint.
