Default Timing belt kit & parts question

I'm looking to replace the t-belt on my 2001 A4 1.8T. It will be my first time replacing it, and I might have a qualified mechanic do the job.

What else should I change while i'm at it?

I was told aside from the timing belt to change both serpentine belts, waterpump, anti-freeze, t-belt dampener, etc? Am I missing anything?

Engine code is AWM.

I noticed Blaufergnugen had some great prices on parts.

How do I tell which kit I need since my model year had a split in the engine code??

Thermostat, idler pulley, etc. Also compare prices at ECS Tuning and PureMS - both sell ready-to-go kits for the job. And don't waste your money on the cam locking tool - it's not needed for the job.

you need to look at the last few numbers on your VIN and match them to what the part says.

you can also check out blauparts.com they have some good prices. i think thats where im going to get my kit from.

edit: just noticed you found them already ^^

I couldn't get a match for the VIN to determine if it's a late or early AWM model. The last six digits of my VIN are 150378

I have searched the forums here and on audiworld for the past couple of hours and read over 50 threads.

A nice VIN decoder at http://www.bitnet.ro/vw/vindecoder told me my car's production date was 06/30/2001... I didn't know they made cars on saturdays!! Anyways, I guess this also corresponds to the manufacturer sticker on the b-pillar that reads 06 01.

Is my A4 considered a 2001.5?
Is it an early or late AWM??

I am comparing prices and kits from ecstuning, blau, and purems

Thanks and I appreciate the feedback.

P.S. Where exactly do I find my transmission codes?

now your vin is 150378. that is a higher number then 042384. 150,000 is higher then 42,000, so the answer is this one...

LOL thanks ghost!

Yeah I finally learned how to read them, and thanks to Mike at PureMS

Just for the future newbies and people with the same issue:

Basically to read the VIN you just need to focus on the last six digits.

So it will be something like 8D-#-1-letter-123456

The only numbers you need is 8D-1-123456

Default Confusion with Europa Parts and early/late vin

Hi, I'm new to the forums, and a bit confused. After reading through the forums here, as well as BlauParts.com, I was certain I needed a late vin TB kit, but I used the live message on Europaparts.com to double check, and the person told me 100% that I need the early kit. My vin is WAUDC68D81A142849. I've heard Europaparts was an excellent site, but I'm either confusing myself here, or unsure if I should trust the site

From Blauparts:

This [early] kit is for the early VIN system, up to VIN 042384.

Since your VIN is [...]142849, I would assume you had car #100,465 AFTER the 'late vins' started happening.

Confirmed with the FCP Euro kit: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/aud...awmtbkit2g12rb

And confirmed again here with Europa:

I really appreciate the help. I agreed, it looked pretty clear to me I needed the late VIN version. Long story short, right before placing my order, I called the Europa sales department and asked him to confirm that we have the same idea of what "late vin" means, and he told me once again that I need the early VIN based on whatever their inventory system is telling him. I guess they have their parts mixed up, and I'm gonna take it safe and avoid this company. I don't understand all the positive comments about them, this has been very annoying.

I've had a nearly* perfect history with them so this is odd, but yeah I would call to make sure from other places before you move forward. Returning that stuff would be a hassle.

*Had to return an item and I had to make a lot of calls and emails because non of the return info was on the website. They don't want to make that easy for you I guess.
