I'm pretty sure the shortblocks the same for all/most of the b5's. At least up to the 01. Internals/heads do defiantly change through the years.

How did you get a hole in your block and you should part w/ your head to me.

Pretty sure ATW and AEB have the same block, while AWM ('01) is a different block. But generally speaking you'll want to find an engine with the same engine code.

Better have the same AEB engine to ensure same specifications. Block specification always differ even if there are many similarities.

You are technically able to use any block you want, but only an 058 block will bolt up without any issues. Because the different years have different ecu's, they have different sensors and stuff. 058 (Aeb) blocks also have an intermediate shaft in the crankcase. 06A (2001+) do not. Any 97-99 block will be the same. 2000 Will work as well but the head on it is different. A 2001 (awm) can work, but odds are you won't want to make it work.

2.0 Blocks are different and the heads have entirely different systems. HOWEVER the 2.0 crank can be used in your 058 block. It UPS your stroke to 92.8mm from 86.4. As for head swaps us 06a block guys use aeb heads, so you got the best option available. There is a thread on audizine dedicated to this. Can't get it for you since I'm on my phone

correct me if i am wrong but these engines are interferance motors right? to extend the stroke would it not cause the piston to hit the valve?

That is correct. That's why stroker pistons are needed. OEM or the like won't work. Custom pistons are needed. Again id look in the engine tech forums on audizine in the b5 section. it is explained thoroughly. If I bring my computer to class later id put it up here

So you want to build your engine... A Complete Newb Writeup all the information needed is withing this write up. also it seems i made a mistake. you do use the 2.0 liter crank in 058 block, but not the one youre thinking off. the one to use is actually the older 2 liter crank, from naturally aspirated vw's with engine code aba. integrated engineering does have stroker kits available, however they are for 06a blocks.
