Marry Christmas,

miracles realy happen:
for 9 month a owe an A4, 1997, 1.8t quattro. it consumes a lot of gas - 13 mpg in a city, but scanning with vag-com did not show any problems, different tests (O2, MAF ....) according the manual returned values as they should be when the car is ok, no diagnostic problems.
today miracle came, i got back home, parked the car, wanted to get a camera, to make photos for an ad, because i am going to sell this strange VEHICLE (swop to HONDA). in5 minutes i was back and tried tostart the car, but it did not aftercrancking for about 5 sec. for the second try it started but the check engine came on. i got realy happy . got the vag com, scaned and got the following:

Codes never appeared after you conducted your tests??? The "open circuits" are the codes resulting from removing your connectors (each injector and the boost valve). The only assumed real code, for the MAF, could explain your poor gas mileage. Try cleaning the MAF, IF you're not satisfied with the mileage or performance and drive. Of course, the mileage could be a compliment of a happy A4 driver!

As to why they didn't appear earlier, that would be a question for VAG-Com folks. They may have more insight.

there have never been any codes before today. today, when i cleared the codes, i started the car again, no codes. and i have not unplaged anything after i parked the car, and have not fixed anything after the codes appeared. and before the parking there where no codes. mistics, seems i am better with honda, at least i had two ones before the Audi, all i did during the three years i had them, was changing oil, coolant and some bearings. but this audi is challenging with his strange gas and codes behavior. concerning the MAF, i tested it while driving and the readings were perfect according the test published on the vag-com site - 130.28 g/sec at 6360 rpm. in any case i will try to clean it. do i need special detergent for that?

I bombed vag-com guys about my problems with the codes, they gave up, talked i should reffer to the audi manual. but the thing is that at audi service center i tested the car several times, no DTC again and they talked that the readings were perfect.
