flex pipe Q

hey, just bought new muffler, and am going to have it installed at a local exhaust shop. when i was taking off my other exhaust my stock flex pipe ripped in half to its no good. do i need a flex pipe or can i tear the rest of the braided flex pipe off so its straight pipe the whole way? i would like to just have them weld the new 2.5" straight from the (im a noob) down pipe? if thats what it is thats connected to the flex.

i dont know too much about this, which is why i posted, so i dont want to look like a complete idiot askign the exhaust shop if they can do that...

if not, where can i buy a flex pipe for cheap?

Ecstuning.com sells flex pipes for cheap (less than $50)...not sure about whether or not the flex pipe is mandatory- I doubt it, but I'm sure you would want it. You're planning on deleting the cats and resonator too?

nope, leavign all that stock, just going flex pipe back. thanks for the site though!

The flex pipe allows for engine movement. It's a PITA
to replace, because the down pipe needs to be disconnected
from the Cat. The flex pipe can then be welded to the down pipe.

You'll probably want the flex pipe. The idea behind it is to allow for drivetrain motion (rocking on the mounts, etc) without straining the exhaust hangers and system. You'd probably want delrin or urethane engine mounts if you were going to ditch the flex pipe, so that excess engine rock or drivetrain motion wouldn't damage anything.

.... so i basically f'd myself by it ripping off??

ummm...talk to "hiwords"....I think he had a shop weld new flex pipes to his down pipe. i'm currently in the same boat and need to replace a damaged flex pipe. I took it to a Volkswagon/Audi tuning shop and they told me to buy a whole new downpipe but I'm taking it to an exhaust shop for them to weld new ones on.

nice... well i have 1.8t and you have 2.8 but shouldnt be too different i guess...

but 1 question... do you need to remove your downpipe then to have an exhaust shop weld it back together?

heres what im working with...

Dont even buy anything, the shop has flex pipes. I had a 2.5" exhaust done and he put a 3" flex pipe and made a full cat back.
