Fuel Leak
Hi All!
I'm a noob with A4's so if I missed something, go easy on me! I tried searching for "fuel leak", "gas leak", "cold start leak" ... and didn't come up with anything.
I've got a 1999 A4 Avant, 1.8t, 5 speed, sadly - no mods.
I've got a fuel leak where my fuel line connects to the fuel rail. Its a compression fitting. I've made sure it is not leaking from where the rubber fuel line is connected to the compression fitting. It is definitely leaking from the fitting itself.
Is there an o-ring or some other kind of washer in there that I can replace? Or am I looking at replacing the line? Does anyone else have this problem?
Thanks!!

So I fixed it last night. Yeah!!
I took it a part and cleaned it up. No o-ring or sealant. No nicks or gouges on the parts that fit together. So I put a little thread sealer (this stuff) on the last two threads and tightened it up - really tight!
Here is a picture of the connection. (This is not my engine, its just a pic I found on the web somewhere and circled my leaky fitting.)

I should add that I only noticed the gas smell when it was really cold. I tried tightening it up the other day but it was still dripping gas. It got down to 22 last night and it didn't smell like gas this morning when I started it up! So I think that cleaning it and adding some thread sealant did the job.
HTH anybody else who might have the same problem and doesn't want to spend $80 (dealer price) on a new fuel hose!

I had the same problem, stupid that there is no o-ring. The fitting on mine was all roughed up. The dealer sold only the line from the gas tank, to the fuel rail (the whole thing, you couldnt order a section). I ended up picking another one up from a junk yard. Glad you got it fixed.
I have a 2007 Audi 1.8 T. Apparently my fuel pump was defective and was replaced (The car went in for a water leak - apparently a cracked thermostat housing). A week or 2 later, after filling up, it was stinking of fuel. I took it in and they did something to the car and I was told to watch it and bring the car back if the smells still persists. The dealer was very vaque about the problem and how they fixed it. Low and behould, yesterday I filled up the tank and it is stinking of fuel, AGAIN! Can anyone, who has had similar problems, please assist me. I really do not know if I can trust my Audi agent!
