Default Grinding/sticking on braking

Hiya Guys,
New to forum. I have a 1999 standard A4, with about 146k on clock at present. Seen better days admittedly but as a family car I can't fault it!
Anyway over the past week I have noticed on braking I get a sticking/grinding just before the car stops. Occurs at all speeds, irrespective of if I brake hard or gently and its always at the point just before the car comes to a standstill. I am wondering if perhaps I have a faulty speed sensor and the ABS is kicking in? I'm not getting any warning lights when it happens.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks.

Very believable - a TrailBlazer I worked on a little while ago had that issue and a wheelspeed sensor was the fix.

Cheers for the help. I'll try that and see if it solves the problem!
