hello everyone :-) new to the forums... have some questions.
Hi everyone. I'm new to these forums and new to Audis as well. Glad to be here. :-)
Anyway. I'm interested in buying an 1998 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro and wanted to see if I was getting a good deal or how much it would be to fix problems like the ones I saw on the car.
I'm not looking to spend more than $5,000 on a used car. So here it goes.
Basically, the car is 98 a4 quattro. drives perfectly fine, no visible damage. 90,000 miles. Low oil light was on.. popped open the hood and took out the oil dipstick, and found absolutely no oil on it!! Plus, when I reversed the car, I found two pools of fluids. 1 was transmission fluid, second was motor oil. I guess I could weld the oil pan w/ jb weld or get a new one. Whatever.
Transmission felt ok. Power steering etc.. everything is ok. coolant fluid is red. (good sign)..
I don't know.. it seems like a good car. I'm just wondering how much it would cost to get all these leaks fixed / transmission replaced... whatever the hell.. and How easy it would be to buy things off of others on these forums if need be.
He's asking between $4,000 to $4,500 for it.
Am I getting a good deal?

Bring it to a garage, have it checked out, get either the cost to fix the leaks or anything else that may be wrong with it without taking a thorough look under the car, and go from there. If the leaks are easy fixes then id say go for it. Definately have it checked out at a garage, or atleast get it on a lift.
Here's what I would say - If the person that owned it didn't keep care of something so critical as oil.. how would you guess the rest of the car was treated? Probably not well. I suspect you'll have big problems later on.
Yeah skip that. It's pretty sad the seller didn't even check the oil level before having a potential buyer come to look at it. That says a lot. But if you are stuck on it, certainly have someone take a thorough look at it, including a compression test since who knows how long it was ran without oil or minimum oil.
What I was told (unfortunately AFTER I bought my Audi) is that you should probably have an extra $1000 to fix it after you buy it. Also if you wanna rod it, then don't buy the 2.8, get a 1.8T. But if I was you I'd probably pass on that car and find a better one. Just remember: just because the Carfax checks out doesn't mean the car is a good buy.
^ what do you mean by "rod" it? I hope you mean "mod" it.
Either way $4,500 for a beat up 98 isn't a good deal. Look around on Craiglist for a well taken care of B5 that has bout 100,000 or less for under $6,000. Usually driven by older people.

Haha i didnt even think to say anything about the engine... Yeah if your going to do any engine mods than your going to want to go with the 1.8T. All you can do really to a 2.8 is intake and exhaust, then if youve got some real money laying around you can supercharge it but that gets expensive...
