Default help is needed!!!

yesturday i bought a 1997 audi a4 1.8t quattro. it grinds and wont go in second while accelerating. but i can downshift and with the clutch in put it into second. third is also starting to grind very lightly. would draining the transmission fluid and putting new stuff in make a difference? what could be wrong with the car?
