Default High RPMS

My girlfriends 1.8T seems to be running higher RPMS than what it should. At 70mph in 5th its running around 3200. My mechanic says from the codes he read (There's a bunch of other crap wrong with it too) he is fairly sure there's something electrical wrong with it. Could that be right or is there another direction I should look?

Thanks for your input!

That is normal, nothing to be worried about. Just how these cars are geared.

Yup. Clear the codes and see what comes back. A lot of them may be old and no longer relevant. Troubleshoot the ones that return.

yeah with a manual tranny its basically impossible to have your engine rev higher at speed than normal. the only possible cause would be the clutch slipping, and if its slipping that bad it wont last long at all. these cars are geared high though.

if that is the rpms at 70mph not under load, its highly unlikely the clutch is slipping and its just the norm. im sure you know what a slipping clutch feels like as well

what are the codes being stored?

I didn't take down the specific codes but there were about 10 he said. I'm going to borrow my friends reader so I can take the time to research them all. It runs fine other than ABS currently not working. Thanks everyone for the help.
