Thumbs down Horrible Grinding From Rear Wheel, Help.

O Dear lord there is this horrible grinding sound coming from my pass. rear wheel. i noticed it when i was in neutral coasting with the windows down. The Grinding speeds up with the wheel speed. Its a grinding/slicing sound. It doesnt matter if the car is off, in neutral or in gear on or off the gas. it still makes this grinding sound. sometimes it fades away a little but sometimes its SO loud. Also, i notice that when im on my brakes i hear a 'worn pad' or 'worn rotor' grinding sound from the same wheel. Connected? Questions comments concerns? Please help. btw, my inspector said i need new rotors when its time to do my brakes...there split and rusting around the edges. [headbang]

ps. its dead *** cold here. and wet. and frozen if that makes a diff.

help. [>_>]

does your car shake when you brake? if it does then you have warped or glazed rotors..
if not then your baring is probably shot...

No shake, just more grind when braking.

I had my rear wheel bearings go out in my 2000 A4 Avant last February. I only had 75,000 at the time. There was a few days that lead up before they failed. Once they failed it was super grinding and the rear end was all over the place going around corners. It sounds like the same thing I went through right before meltdown. It cost 500 to replace. I live in the mountains, not near any city though.

split and rusting around the edges ???

Sounds like you have seriously worn pads and rotors. If you ignore your brakes for a long time the pads can wear to the point that they start deteriorating and literally falling apart. Perhaps bits are dragging or are trapped around the spinning parts. Maybe the rotor is deteriorated to the point where bits are falling off and rubbing other spinning parts. Problem sounds like regular brake maiantenance issue.

wheel bearing + brakes (but when you lift the car, try to shake the wheel by holding at 9 and 3 O'Clock, just to check for bad bearing)

same problem here. I'm looking into parts and finding conflicting information:

http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com...tion=000568327

http://www.blauparts.com/proddetail.asp?prod=F7W1006-A

http://www.autohausaz.com/search/pro...0Bearing%20Kit

Most of the parts I'm finding are showing what looks like a larger skateboard wheel bearing, which is what I expected. Then I saw that kit in the last link that shows two separate bearings, one inner and one outer. I noticed that it also says there are two kits per car, but that looks like one kit to me.

Anyone have any ideas? Any recommendations on where to get these parts? I figured Blau would be a good source and I'm leaning towards them, but that last link makes me a bit worried.

No way man. These parts are way cheaper than that. The labor is what's going to screw us. I just need to find someone with a press so I can press the old ones out and press the new ones in. It shouldn't be too much work other than that, but we'll see.
