how to adjust spark dwell?
i want to upgrade to LS2 coils because im getting multiple misfires, and there cheaper/ more powerful/ reliable.
anyone know if i can use unisettings or similar to adjust the spark dwell? need to bump from 2ms to 5ms |
Youll need some for of aftermarket controller. Theres a betetr route by just deleting the ICM completely and replacing with coil on plugs.
What engine do you have? |
What year is your car? If it's DBW there are a couple of maps that control dwell, not easy but it's by far the best way. There's a thread about it on nefmoto, has a lot of good information.

We already tried tuning the fuel and plug gap
|
What kind of tune is it?
|
I don't know how cheap the ls2 coils are but you can swap to fsi push ins and they are $20 a piece. I did it on my A4 and its awesome. Does the S4 even have an icm?
|
2.0 coils need to be converted to 3 pin adapters on the s4. For a cheaper or near same price i would rather concert to ls2.
Vast stage 3 tune, ko4s, upgraded fuel pump, set at 19 psi. Original coils and icm. Im just wondering if the dwell can be controlled with unisettings or something similar |
2.0 coils are 4 pin. If the S4 is 3 pin and is similiar to the A4 it is not that hard and I am sure light years easier then converting LS2 coils. Plus it has been done. I would atleast look into before becoming dead set on the LS2.
Have you test fitted the LS2's? How much do they cost? Do they need an external ignition control module? How are they going to be secured? + the dwell issue. I am not saying what you have in mind will not work BUT this is issues that have already been resolved with the 2.0 setup. |
Ls2 coils, plug wires, and connectors are cheaper than tfsi coils, adapter plates, icm converters.
You can get 8 ls2 coils for about $110. I want to do this because it hadn't been done to a s4. Its cheaper. More powerful. Reliable and the parts can be had at AutoZone rather than ordering it. I know all about 2.0 coils, i covered them on my tt 225 quattro. There's nothing really special about them there just a tiny bit better. |
