Idle/Tick-over Problem
My A4 1.8T B5 (1995) has a problem when idling, the revs bounce up and down below the 1k for a while before it settles at 900, this happens whenever I put the clutch in approaching a set of lights etc or when parked in neutral, can anybody give me some insight as to what is causing this? I had this problem on a previous car and somebody suggested the air-flow sensor?

A good first step would be to remove your mass air flow sensor and clean it. Any codes?

Unplug the MAF and see if your car runs better.....or the same....if it runs better, there's your issue....

Where is the MAFS located? How can I get to it? Any specific tools that i'l need too?

MAF sensor is easily cleaned or replaced. It's 1 connector, and four 10mm nuts (as I recall). You will need to remove the top of the air filter, and remove the plastic housing/tube that goes into the MAF, but apart from that it should be a 10min job...then clean it with electronics cleaner, there's a little filament in there...
Also check all your vacuum hoses for leaks etc... |
