Question Ignition Control Unit Broken Again??!!!!

Hi all,
Just joined. First Post.

I replaced my ICU 7 Months ago on my 1997 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8t. I replaced it with a Brand New Bosch module when I was encountering extreme shaking on idle and poor acceleration and flashing CEL. I replaced the module and all it fixed the issue. I also changed coils recently.

I started my car tonight and am having the exact same problems.

Is it possible that my ICU can go out again after only 7 months? What can be causing this if it is busted again?? Has anyone replaced theres twice within a 1-year period???

Please help, thanks!

J

Yup, it could be a defective coilpack (even though you installed new ones) or the ICM (ICU). Do you have a vag-com? What I would do is VAG to see which cylinder is misfiring. Clear the codes, then switch the coils around to see if the cylinder changes when you check for codes again. That would point to a specific bad coil pack. Repeat the same procedure for spark plugs.

It could also be your MAF. You really need to get the car checked for codes and post em up. We can help you more then.

Thanks brrman for the help.

At this point, I do not have a Vag-com, but looks like I will be needing one at this rate.

Can I purchase a vag-com from my local Kragens? Or can I buy a basic OBD code reader for my car from a local shop to pull off the codes?

Thanks again

You can get Vag Com online. An OBD code reader would work for reading/clearing codes but VAG Com is way more useful. Obvious downside there is VAG Com is useless w/o a lap top.

Thanks for your help,
I am going to run to my local shop to grap a code reader and in the mean time order the VAG-COM online.

Do I need a OBDI or OBDII for my 1997 A4 1.8 Quattro?
Is there an easy way to tell? I don't want Kragen people telling me the wrong thing when i get there...

Thanks,

All,
Just pulled the codes and got the following:
P0304
P1545

Do you guys know what this means? I am trying to look up what it is but I am sure some of you guys know exactly.

Symptoms:
Real rough idle
Car sometimes shuts off when in park
Vibration when accelerating
Blinking CEL

Replaced
ICU 7 months ago and all ignition coils 1 month ago.

Thanks,

Flashing CEL means misfire. If you can wait until the vag com comes, you can figure out which cylinder is misfiring, then swap the coils and see if the misfire follows the coil. If it does, replace it.

P0304 is EGR valve insufficient flow, I have the same code on mine, I clear it and it comes back about once a month. a new EGR valve is expensive, so i've been putting mine off until after i get the TB done. I dunno what the other code means off the top of my head, but try the stickies, there's and explanation of ETC's in there.
