Default Intro and couple of questions

Hi everybody.
Just wanted to introduce myself and ask couple questions.

Just picked up a 2001 A4Q 5 speed. 112k miles. One owner. Good maint. history. This is my winter ride as my commute is 49miles one way in Chicago .

My primary ride is 2002 BMW Z3 Coupe..... I am pretty active on bimmerforums.com and bimmerfest.com.... however my last WAG product was an 87 Jetta, so it has been a while.

I bought the A4 last night and after driving it home from the dealer (2 hr away), I get my first check engine light - P0171, which based on my limited research seems to be a MAF.

So this morning I changed Oil (M1 5w30), plugs (ngk), disconnected the battery to reset the light and see if comes back....and it did.

So here are my general questions about Audi and specific ones about my problem:

1. Is there a free online Audi Parts database.... and maybe a copy of Factory Service manual?

2. Relating to the MAF - It should be around the airbox - but I just dont see it - can somebody point my nose to where it is and how to remove it?

3. Buying a new MAF - i see people recomend buying from ecs tuning - but which one. I think my engine code is AWM - but what is the difference between the three here: http://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B5_A4-...Engine/Intake/

Thanks everybody!

Welcome to AF!

Its nice to see some intelligent questions lol.

I suggest you invest in a Bentley's manual. I have a service manual in PDF form if you'd prefer that, post your email address and I'll email it to ya. As for parts, I'm not sure what you mean. Are you lookin for a database of part numbers?

Regarding your second question, the MAF will be inline with the intake in between the airbox and the throttle body. AWM is the 1.8T motor and I have a V6, but just to give you a ballpark, here's a pic of my motor:

The MAF is underneath that plastic shield that's shaped like Texas; you can just see the shiny clamp on the right side there. That shield pops right off, and you'll be able to get the MAF out from there.
Last question, before you buy a new MAF, you might try cleaning yours. Its possible it may just be crusty.

A final note, a worthwhile investment would be an OBDII scanner, way faster & easier than disconnecting your battery.

Thanks!
if you can email the pdf to schernov@gmail.com that would be great.

As far as the MAFs on the ECS site - as long as the engine code matches - I am good right?

Thanks for the quick response.

as far as online parts database - I am looking for something similar to this:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do but for Audi

Ahh gotcha. A favorite of mine is blauparts.com, between them and ECS you should be able to get just about anything.

I looked a little closer at those MAFs, near as I can tell the first two are almost the same, the third is a re-manufactured original. I'd go for one of the first two Bosch units.

I'll send that email directly

EDIT: Just kidding. I just remembered that manual is on my external HD, which is in my office. I'll make a note and send it to you first thing in the morning. Sorry!

When ordering from ECS, just give them the VIN of your car and you'll get the correct part. As for an online parts guide, use www.vagcat.com - it's free and extremely helpful.
