It's been driving me crazy!

The alternator on the 2.8 30v b5... where is it located exactly, and whats the best way of getting to it. God I hate german cars.

passengers side mid engine under a frame rail infront of the starter, have to be on the floor to see it.

Is there any easy way of getting this done? Any tutorials?

I think you probably want to put the front of the car into the service position to give you more room to work on it. I have not personally done the job but it looks like you are going to have to get it out from underneath. I'm not trying to be rude but if you can't find you may want to get the help of a buddy on this job.

You can do partial service position (move the core forward without breaking the cooling system open), but it's a big pain in the ass. Best bet is as stated - open the front of the car up to do it. It's a lot easier that way to get at everything.

yep. what they said. if you need a new alternator this would be a good time to consider the timing service if you are anywhere close to being due. I have heard of some people being able to "wiggle" the alternator out in the partial service position but the "easiest" way to do it is to do the "full frontal removal". Having done the alternator my 2.7T, with the timing service and the front end removed, I really can't picture it being possible any other way (2.7T and 2.8 are virtually identical in the front)
