I'm hunting for a replacement (used) dash cluster, in the hope that for hopefully no more than 100 bucksI may get something that's better than what I have now (which is exactly nothing as long as the temperature is above 40 F)(all efforts to "squeeze down" either the ribbon tape or LCD glass as per online DIY advicehave proven utterly useless).

My part number is 8D0 919 930 Q (1999 a4 2.8 Q), and I'm wondering if this is the ONLY dash that will work with my car, or if, because you and up reprograming it anyway, any dash (from the same car with the same features) will work? I've found some, 8D0 920 950 DX, 8D0 920 980 QX, which look identical, do these work? Has anyone braved this challenge and come out successful, (and by success I mean did not fork over $1000 to the dealer), and if so what part did you use, andhow did you go about programming it (by yourself or have someone else do it for you)?

I know this is the most over-asked question, but I'm just looking for at least a few success stories, or some newinsight, to give mejust a littlehope of ever reading the outside temp. or distance till empty in my beloved b5

Did your entire cluster go out, or just your LCD screen? I didn't realize that the actual cluster was my issue, and (the only time I've ever have done this) brought my car into the shop. They got a new cluster for $100 from the autowrecker up the road. I doubt they were the same number, but I'm ASSuming.

 

and did it fix your problem? (and BTW what was the matter with your old cluster, the gauges or the LCD?) my LCD is almost completely shot, it only works in the winter when outside temps barely rise above freezing. All my gauges work fine(except the fuel gauge drops off much faster on the 2nd half than the first - I go about 200+ miles before it gets near the 1/2 mark, then it hits empty at around 300 miles) but I can deal with this. What I can't stand is not knowing what gear I'm in while using [my recently self-repaired! ] tiptronic. And it would be nice to know distance to empty, outside temp., estimated mileage, etc. , though these are not so critical, merely nice conviences. I called the dealer, and they said $800+ for the cluster, and another $200+ in labor. I love my car, but I'm just too damn cheap to fork out that kind of cash.
