Just got a remote starter...
Is there a neutral switch on these cars though, what would be its purpose. Theres a safety for the clutch, and the reverse switch, but is there a neutral switch?
There are starters designed for manuals, in case you wanted to go that route (kinda defeats the purpose, it sounds like you just inherited this remote starter). Unfortunately, they definitely arent as convenient. To use them you have to press a button on the remote to leave the car running, then remove the key, close the door, lock the door, and then press the remote button to shut the car off. This allows you to remote start next time. The idea is since you exited the vehicle when the car was running, it has to be in neutral. The reason why this sucks is you have to do it every time you get out of the car if you want to always be able to remote start. If you happen to always know what times you will want to start the car remotely then this isnt such a big deal.

just curious... why the hell does everyone leave their car in gear? i always leave it in nuetral, but anytime i get it serviced or smog checked or whatever i start the car and he car jumps cuz i never leave it in gear and im not used to that ****... its incredibly annoying.. lol
i have an alarm from the brand Performance Teknique, i had it on my ford svt contour before this car and now, whenever this snow decides to take a vacation, i'll be putting it on my a4. The way i wired iy was the contour had a transaxle position switch was open whenever it was in any gear and closed when in neutral. So i wired that in series with the bypassed clutch switch and that made it safe. But like Mr Phil said, WHO IN THE WORLD LEAVES THEIR SHIFTERS IN ANY GEAR???? Unless i end up parking in some steep hill, my parking brake is more than enough to hold the car.
Most newer remote starts have a safety bypass for manual cars. Also on anything pre like 2003 they are not crazy complicated to install. As long as you have a wiring diagram for your car or you know how to test for the wires you need it's not so hard. If it's a pre 2000 you might not even need to use bypass modules or anything.
