Lost key - Replace ignition cylinder and locks

Hello all,

I have a 1998 audi a4 1.8t that has been treating me very well since I purchased it last year. Unfortuntely, I lost my only key yesterday on a trip with my friends. Who knows where it could of fallen out. Either way, i need a new key and ignition cylinder and possibly locks. I don't quite understand the central locking system thingy on these cars though. Can I get away with just buying the ignition cylinder under the steering column with a key? Or do I have to purchase the door locks and trunk lock as well? The key is obviously specific to the ignition, but what about the doors/trunk?

The part number on the lock cylinder is 4B0 905 851, and I have found several of them on ebay that come with the key switchblade. Some come with the door and trunk locks too, while some are just the cylinder and key. It seems alot cheaper to replace the cylinder rather than bring it to a locksmith for them to decode.

And i also assume that some programming for the key fob portion will be necessary. Will this guide pertain once I get the new stuff?

Thanks for the responses!

honestly, all that sounds like a pain in the ass. Ide call up a local stealership and ask if you had the car towed down there if they could help you out.

You take the title to your car and photo ID to the dealer (to prove its your car), and they make a new key based on the VIN of the car. Practice touching your toes first so you won't throw your back out when they bend you over the service counter to insert the invoice...

To be honest, i dont really feel like getting the car towed like an hour, or dealing with any dealerships for that matter. I already have the ignition cylinder and switch already off. Heck i can even stick a screwdriver into the ignition switch and make it turn ;) However, i dont feel like starting my car with a screwdriver or always leaving the door unlocked. I think ill just buy the new (used) cylinder and install that. It will be enough to get me going, but i have a feeling that the door locks are different. Or they could all be universal and run off the central transmitter. I have no clue to be honest.

Would anybody happen to know anything on the technical part of my situation?

I should have said it more clearly - your car does not have to be there, just you and your proof of ownership.

yeah aren't the keys cut to the vin of the car?

but if you have none they make you buy a set which costs like $100-150 i believe.
