Your coolant temperature gauge displaying correctly? Bad coolant temperature sensors can screw things up.

+1 A bad coolant temperature sensor can really throw you off. I had a similar issue and thought it was coil packs after i replaced my plugs, but ended up replacing the ects and it took care of it. For this reason every time I've bought a 1.8T its the first thing i replace, I've found them from $15-25, so its worth replacing.

My 1999 A4 1.8t had the same exact problem. Try the ignition control module. If your misfires stay on the same cylinders, that's the problem.

2000+ doesn't have that.

I am having the same problem with my 99 audi a4. checked everything, switched coil packs, spark plugs MAF power control module, fuel filter air filter everything, still stuttering, comperession tests were fine, only stuttering in cylinder 1 and 3. don't know what it could be, paid someone to look at it and even they said they have no idea, they tested everything all wires to coil packs, cat is fine, o2 sensors are fine, everything.

The last two times I had the same problem, first time it was ignition coils and other time it was suction jet pump that fell apart in two pieces. Although i don't remember what the stored codes were the second time.

I'm leaning toward the wrong plugs or wrong gap.

Also, even though you replaced the coilpacks doesn't mean that you got swapped a good coilpack. I was in the exact same boat and couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. I ended up going to my dealership and they told me my coilpacks were bad, and they only had less than 100 miles on them. Changed out the packs and BAM, no more problems...Especially with our 2001 model, go to Audi and get the right coilpacks cause the ones you can get at local parts stores are garbage.
