My wheel refinishing project (pix inside)
So a little over a month ago I snagged some RS6 reps in good shape, but not good enough for me. Not to sound snobby, I'm just very attentive to detail, and I wanted them darker. I contacted my uncle, who is a professional body-dude. We started by taking some 180 grit to all the bad bits of curb rash. We pretty much only used the 180 around the edge.
After we sanded down some rash

After that, we went over all those spots, this time in much longer strokes, with 320 grit, to smooth it out. We also took the 320 to any other imperfections. Any little dings or anything.

After that, we went over the entire surface with 400, then 600. Pix of that

Then I decided to paint the insides of the wheels flat black, for a nice contrast, and I think it will look better than the dirty aluminum. So we cleaned the **** out of the insides. We hit it first with the 400 grit, just to get the hard dirt off. Then we hit it when a red scuff pad, scrubbed it with thinner, then wiped it down with Prep-All.
Before

After

We masked off the face of the wheel to be safe so paint wouldn't get out

We then papered and taped the inside so we wouldn't get paint on the face, and for a nice line

I don't have any pix yet of just the painted wheel without the tape. But yeah. We started masking off to paint the face. Much more of a pain in the ***.

I'll upload more pix later.

I like the fact your painting the barrels most ******** won't. I painted a set of b7 rs4 wheels for a guy and it took like 3 weeks w/ prep and paint. They came out amazing(like they were factory painted) till he curbed them
Yeah, for me it's go big or go home. I know how attentive I am to detail, so if I don't take my time doing the prep I won't like it later. I am going with a gun metal on the outside.
I actually put the tires on. For a few reasons, but mainly one. The small reason, being that it gives you an area to mask and tape on. But mainly, the idea of stretching a tire of a freshly painted wheel makes me cringe. I've seen it and it almost always does some kind of damage.
