in need of help with 2.8 transmission
So I've been having trouble with my transmission in my 2.8 when i put it in drive and pull away it doesn't want to shift out of first gear it only does maybe 10 mph and just sits there and revs real high it doesn't do it everytime though it has done that a few times while I'm driving as well where it all of sudden just starts reving real high maybe about 3rd or 4th gear and also when its in first gear and does that I've tried switching it manually to shift into second and it didn't want to shift at first I'm trying to avoid a few thousand dollars in repair but idk what it could be can anybody help me with this granted my beloved a4 has 131,000 miles on it but getting rid of it isn't an option just because I love the pelican blue and I'm a broke security guard any input would be appreciated

Have you ever checked your fluid level?
Is there a way for me to do that? I have had the fluid changed twice in the tranny since I've had it I don't know how many times it was changed before I had it if any at all but the last time I got it changed my mechanic said that there wasn't any metal shaving in it or anything if that helps I don't think its time to change it again but I guess I could give it a shot
It's not easy to check on that car. No dipstick. It's messy, the fluid has to be at the right temperature, and the average gas station guy may not do it right. If you don't want to do it, might pay to have it checked somewhere they know what they're doing. Trannys are expen$ive.
take it back to your mechanic to check the fluid as these trans are very touchy if they're low.
Ok thanks I'll take it to my guy to change it next time I get paid and will post if it helped or not
i wouldnt say it needs a service but just to check the level and for leaks
^^^I agree^^^ That fluid's expensive, don't change it for these symptoms. If you don't have enough hydraulic pressure to shift, that might be because the fluid is low, but not because it's old and dirty.
And I'm not sure you take it back to the same guy. Some of these little guys just don't pay attention to the proper procedure on this. Maybe you even take it to the dealer. It will be done right and you'll know where you are. |
i have the same thing on my 2.8 155,000
mine was shifting like crap and it took an entire quart, shifts like butter now
make sure the car is level when adding the fluid and at correct temps |
